Backup Characters Guide

Backup Characters are a new accessibility and progression system in Endless Ragnarok. Creative Director Tetsuya Fukuhara explained that players can designate a backup character for another player to use—if you lack progression on a specific skyfarer, you can borrow a fully developed character from the community to complete standard quests while building your own roster through Conflux and story content.

The system addresses the power gap between Bahamut-clear and Zero-clear veterans while giving returning casual players a smoother path back into endgame content without forcing immediate full investment in all 29 characters.

You set a character as your backup, and other players can invoke that character when they need assistance in compatible quests. Conversely, you can use backup characters shared by other skyfarers when your own roster lacks the level, weapons, or Master Traits required for a given encounter. This creates a community-driven catch-up layer distinct from AI companions.

Backup Characters complement the expanded assist mode now available in Maniac and Proud difficulty quests. Together they reduce friction for players re-entering Relink after the two-year gap since the original launch.

• Standard quests: Borrow developed DPS or support when your mains are under-leveled
• Story progression: Clear narrative gates while farming Conflux materials for your preferred characters
• Learning Chaos patterns: Pair with assist mode before committing your own optimized builds
• Solo players: Reduce reliance on random co-op matchmaking for non-Chaos content

Chaos-difficulty and Summon-focused content still expects personal build investment. Use Backup Characters as a bridge, not a permanent substitute for endgame optimization.

Director Fukuhara positioned Conflux as the fastest catch-up path and Backup Characters as the social safety net for standard questing. Run Conflux surveys to farm weapon materials and level characters efficiently, then deploy Backup Characters when story or side quests demand specific roles you have not finished developing.
